Overview

Page to Markdown Extension is designed with privacy as a core principle. This extension processes web content entirely on your local device and does not collect, transmit, or store any personal data on external servers.

Data Collection

We do not collect any data.

Specifically, this extension does NOT collect:

Personally identifiable information (name, email, etc.)
Browsing history
Website content you capture
Analytics or usage statistics
Location data
Financial information
Health information
Authentication credentials

How the Extension Works

Content Processing: When you capture a web page, the content is processed entirely within your browser using JavaScript.
OCR Processing: When you use OCR mode, the extension takes screenshots of the visible browser tab using Chrome's built-in captureVisibleTab API. These screenshots are processed locally by Tesseract.js (an open-source OCR engine running inside the extension) to extract text. Screenshots and extracted text are stored in browser memory only during the active session and are included in the downloaded ZIP file. No screenshots or OCR data are sent to any external server.
Session State: While a capture session is running, its data (captured pages, images, OCR results) is kept in the extension's own local browser storage on your computer, so the session is not lost if Chrome pauses the extension in the background. It is deleted when you stop the session or restart the browser, and it is never sent anywhere.
File Download: Captured content is saved directly to your Downloads folder as a ZIP file. The extension uses Chrome's downloads API which saves files locally to your computer.
No External Communication: The extension does not send your data to any server of ours or of anyone else, and it has no analytics. All processing happens client-side, including OCR text recognition. The only network requests it makes are to download the images of the page you capture, directly from the website that hosts them (the same images your browser already shows), so they can be included in the ZIP file.
Auto-capture Scope: Auto-capture only records pages in the browser window where you started the session. Tabs in other windows are never captured, and private (incognito) windows are only captured if you started the session in one.

Permissions Explained

This extension requests the following permissions:

Permission	Purpose
`activeTab`	Read content from and take OCR screenshots of the current tab when you click capture
`downloads`	Save the ZIP file to your Downloads folder
`scripting`	Add the extraction script to a page only when you capture it, or while an auto-capture session is running
`offscreen`	Create an offscreen document to run the Tesseract.js OCR engine
`contextMenus`	Add "Save selection as Markdown" to the right-click menu
`<all_urls>`	Capture pages during an auto-capture session and download the images of captured pages

Clipboard, Links and Preferences

Copy as Markdown writes the captured page to your clipboard only when you click the button. The extension never reads your clipboard.
Review and problem links: after a few successful downloads the popup may show a small card asking for a review. The Chrome Web Store or GitHub only opens if you click one of its links. Nothing is sent otherwise.
Preferences such as the chosen download format, the OCR language and a download counter for the review card are stored locally in the extension. They contain no page content and are never sent anywhere.

Third-Party Libraries

This extension uses the following open-source libraries, all bundled locally within the extension package. None of them are loaded from external servers or collect any data:

JSZip - Creates ZIP files from captured content
Tesseract.js (v5.1.1) - Optical character recognition (OCR) engine that extracts text from screenshots. Runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly, with English and Danish language data bundled in the extension. No images or text are sent to any external service.

Data Storage

The only data stored by this extension:

Session state: Whether a capture session is active and which window it belongs to
Captured pages and URLs: Stored during a session to build the ZIP file and prevent duplicate captures
Images, OCR screenshots and text: Stored during a session for inclusion in the downloaded ZIP file

This data is kept only in the extension's local browser storage on your computer, and only while a session is running. It is deleted when you stop the session or restart the browser, and it is never transmitted externally.

Before starting each capture session, users must accept the following terms:

User Responsibility: You are solely responsible for any content you capture and how you use it.
Copyright Compliance: Captured content may be protected by copyright. It is your responsibility to ensure you have the right to use any content you capture.
No Warranty: This tool is provided "as is" without any warranties. The developer is not liable for any damages or legal issues arising from use of captured content.
Legal Compliance: You agree to only use captured content in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Intellectual Property: You agree not to use this tool to infringe on intellectual property rights or violate terms of service of any website.

By using this extension, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to these terms.

Children's Privacy

This extension does not knowingly collect any information from children under 13 years of age.

Changes to This Policy

If we make changes to this privacy policy, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this document.
